As an Intermediate API Integration Engineer, you will be a motivated professional at the heart of our core business capabilities. You will design, develop, and maintain high-performance APIs and robust integrations, collaborating closely with development, technical support, and business teams. This role is key to managing our API Gateway (Apigee), ensuring platform security, and integrating Google Cloud Platform (GCP) AI services to expose intelligent features. API Development & Design:
- Design and develop robust, scalable APIs using industry best practices (e.g., REST, SOAP, OpenAPI/Swagger).
- Design and develop with API First design methodology and reusability in mind.
- Contribute to the API lifecycle management process- from documentation and development, to monitoring and versioning.
- Develop, deploy, and maintain API Proxies on the API Gateway platform (Apigee), including implementing security policies, traffic management, and caching under supervision.
Platform Management & Operations:
- Responsible for supporting and maintaining Middleware and API Gateway technologies (i.e., Apigee) and integrated components in test and production environments.
- Deploy, test, and maintain integration pipelines for workflows and services using CI/CD.
- First level of support for all integration issues, managing incident resolution and problem management on the API Gateway platform.
- Perform standby duties.
- Analyse the environment to detect deficiencies and recommend solutions for continuous improvement.
Integration & AI Services:
- Integrate APIs with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) AI services and models (e.g., Vertex AI) to enable intelligent capabilities.
- Develop and support conversational AI agents (virtual agents/chatbots) and integrate them into business workflows via APIs.
Collaboration & Documentation:
- Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including API specifications.
- Collaborate with development teams on the API/integration middleware platform and provide input on solution design and integration patterns.
- A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., Bachelor's degree, National Diploma, or equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- Google Cloud Certified - Professional Cloud Developer certification or related.
- Previous working experience as an Integration Engineer/Developer for 5+ years is required.
- Proven, hands-on experience developing and deploying APIs on a leading API Gateway platform.
- Strong knowledge and practical experience with Google Apigee (Apigee X or Edge) is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of CI/CD automation tools, such as Jenkins or equivalent.
- Solid experience with API lifecycle management concepts, including API security and developer portals.
- Strong SOA and Microservices understanding.
- Hands-on experience designing and developing inbound and outbound integration interfaces.
- Good understanding of industry standards and technical adapters like GraphQL, REST, SOAP, OpenAPI/Swagger, etc., and hands-on experience in XML, JSON, XSD, JavaScript.
- 2-3 years of Java coding experience (preferred for Apigee custom policies/integrations).
- Understanding of integration security standards such as OAuth 2.0 and JWT.
- Experience with the Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
Highly Desirable Skills:
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and its related services, particularly:
- Vertex AI.
- Vertex AI Agents for conversational AI development.
- MCP for LLMs to access and interact with external data sources and tools.
- Cloud Functions or Cloud Run for serverless integration logic.
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages commonly used for AI/ML model consumption.
- Knowledge of the use of container technology such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with Message Queues (AMQP) or streaming platforms (e.g., RabbitMQ).
Exposure to Agile methodologies, such as SCRUM and KANBAN.
